AzNet
AzNET (Internet Access and Infrastructure Development for research, educational and civil society development purposes) project initiated in 2004 is also a network infrastructure dedicated to education and research institutions. This project is coordinated by the Ministery of Communication and Information Technologies (MCIT), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Open Society Institute - Assistance Foundation (OSI – AF) and AzRENA. The duration of the project is 3 years with a total budget of $US 1.3 million. The AzNET project was officially closed on June 2007 and all equipment was passed from UNDP to MCIT. Considering the impossibility to further keep AzNET neither under UNDP funds and authority, nor the government, ministers addressed international donor organizations to support AzNET for one more year, until the start of the next “State Program on Informatization of Education 2008-2012”. Relief International (RI) is nowadays in charge of AzNET activities in cooperation with the Ministry of Education.

IRUVX-PP
IRUVX-PP aims at establishing the preparatory phase of the IRUVX-FEL consortium.
The successful demonstration of single-pass free electron lasers (FEL) around the year 2000 triggered a number of research centres in Europe, the United States and Asia to initiate the construction of new research infrastructures. These projects are based on strong science cases put forward by interested research communities.
The new FEL sources combine the wide and continuously tunable wavelength range of synchrotron radiation with ultra-short pulses and coherence of lasers, but at much higher peak and average power, offering completely new research opportunities in different areas of science for a large research community. Several European countries are supporting the construction of national FEL facilities which are now combining their forces and coordinating their activities to build and operate a distributed European facility, the IRUVX-FEL. This facility will be able to offer a suite of complementary sources and instrumentation that is unsurpassed in the world.

LINKing Scientific Computing in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean
The Cyprus Institute is developing a Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CSTRC) that will include a high performance computing (HPC) facility on a scale expected to be in the tens of teraflops, with an associated research and educational centre devoted to computational science. The CSTRC will be designed primarily to serve the needs of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The LinkSCEEM Support Action aims to ensure that in its planning and early development phases the CSTRC develops strong anchors in both the European ICT infrastructure and the Eastern Mediterranean scientific community, thereby helping to build scientific and technological bridges between Europe and the Middle East and to narrow the digital gap between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western World.
This will be achieved through the action of a consortium of European and US leaders in the fields of HPC and computational science and of prominent Eastern Mediterranean research institutions. The consortium will conduct studies, prospective work and outreach activities relevant to the integration of CSTRC in the EU HPC landscape and to the attainment of its regional dimension.

French National Grid Initiative
2008-12-22
The e-Toile project (2001-2003) created a high performance data processing grid with computers of French academic and industrial research centres.
The government created in 2001 the ACI GRID programme to support the development of Grids in France. ACI GRID launched in 2003 two national grid programmes “GRID 5000” and “Data Grid Explorer”.
The “GRID 5000” infrastructure is being deployed at 9 HPC centers in Bordeaux, Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Nancy, Orsay, Rennes, Sophia-Antipolis and Toulouse. Grid 5000 will be developed in 2008-2011 by the INRIA Aladdin-G5K project. Grid 5000 has at present mote than 4500 cores distributed through 1500 systems.
The “Data Grid Explorer” is an emulation environment consisting of a large cluster (432 processors, at IDRIS), a database of experimental conditions and tools to control and analyse experiments. The budget is €1 million.
The National grid initiative EGEE France has the status of a project and includes 7 participants: CEA/DSM, CGG, CNRS, CS SI, CRSA, HealthGrid and CNES.

RENATER
In 1991 the government decided to establish the national high-speed research network RENATER. A legal structure (Groupement d’Interet Public (GIP) Renater) associates the various research and education institutions and acts as the legal operational unit in charge of the service. The members of the GIP RENATER are eminent French Research organisations (CEA, CIRAD, CNES, CNRS, INRA, INRIA, INSERM, BRGM, CEMAGREF and IRD), and the French Ministry for Research and Education. RENATER has a distributed architecture. The backbone is at 2.5 and 10 Gbps. More than 800 sites are connected to RENATER via campus, metropolitan or regional networks. RENATER has deployed WDM topology on part of its network to provide lambda connections to high-demanding customers involved in important research projects. RENATER has a 41 Gbps link to GÉANT2, a 10 Gbps to CERN and a 10 Gbps link to DFN.
The budget for 2008 is €21 million.

Providing an Infrastructure for Research on Electoral Democracy in the European Union
2008-02-01
PIREDEU is a design study to assess the feasibility of providing an infrastructure for research into citizenship, political participation, and electoral democracy in the European Union (EU). Such an infrastructure would endow the social science community with the most essential information required for a recurrent audit of the most important aspects of the electoral process in the European Union. Since elections are crucial instruments of popular control, elite accountability, and popular representation, auditing these processes is seen as good practice in a number of democracies.
Such audits empirically assess the nature of electoral processes and detect challenges and threats to the quality of these processes. This infrastructure project focuses on data which, if not collected at the time of an election, will either be lost or will be recorded in a manner incompatible with the way in which other relevant data have been recorded, making the complete picture unavailable for future research. At the EU supra-national level, democratic rules and procedures are not yet well established and the institutions of multi-level governance are repeatedly renegotiated and adapted. Auditing the quality of the electoral process at the EU-level is therefore essential.

D-Grid

2006-08-02
D-Grid is the German national eScience Grid. It consists of six Community Grid projects and the D-Grid Integration Project (DGI) started to build a sustainable Grid infrastructure in Germany, to establish methods of e-science in the German scientific community.
The D-Grid integration project (DGI) of the D-Grid consortium has to integrate all developments from the different community projects in one common D-Grid platform. This platform will be offered as services to the german scientific community.
Germany was one the first European countries to engage in major national grid initiatives. In 1997 the leading German Supercomputer Centres started the UNICORE project to provide in easy-to-use secure remote access to high-end machines. The UNICORE software development was funded by BMBF. The follow-up project UNICORE plus ended in 2002. The UNICORE software is now used by the large German computer centres and in several European projects like EUROGRID.
More than 40 groups of German nuclear and particle physicists have chosen FzK as site for the regional grid computing centre GridKa. GridKa provides a powerful grid infrastructure.
BMBF announced D-grid, a German e-Science Initiative, in March 2004. D-grid started officially in September 2005. BMBF will provide €100 million for this 5-year initiative, starting with almost €20 million for the first 3-year phase. More than 100 German scientific institutions cooperate in the D-grid consortium. The goal is to design, build and operate a network of distributed, integrated and virtualized high-performance resources and related services which allow processing of large amounts of scientific data and information.
The D-grid infrastructure is being tested and applied to a large number of Community Grids in the areas of high-energy physics (HEP-Grid), astrophysics (AstroGrid-D), medicine and life sciences (MediGrid), Earth sciences (C3 Grid, GDI-Grid, WISENT), engineering sciences (InGrid, AeroGrid), scientific libraries (TextGrid), research and education (F&L-Grid), finance (BisGrid, FinGrid) and several industrial grid environments (BauVOGrid, Biz2Grid, PartnerGrid, ProGrid).

E-Infrastructures Reflection Group Support Programme 2
The e-Infrastructures Reflection Group Support Programme 2 (e-IRGSP2) project provides full support to the work of the e-Infrastructures Reflection Group (e-IRG). The e-IRG has been instrumental in the development of the policies and documenting the best practices, producing five white papers and a roadmap presenting the consensus of the leading European Grid and networking infrastructure experts. The e-IRGSP2 uses the experiences of the previous support action (e-IRGSP), combined with an in-depth analysis of the evolution of the e-IRG itself, to plan for an optimal support strategy.
The activities of the project are based on supporting the process of the e-IRG, modeled as an iterative repetition of four phases:
- Studying the state-of-the-art and best practices,
- Creating scenarios based on the data (white papers and roadmaps),
- Establishing consensus about the actions needed (e-IRG recommendations) and
- Engaging with the necessary stakeholders.
The support is based on three services: Secretarial support, which is involved in all of the activities. Its role is central in enabling e-IRG to study the state-of-the-art and engage with the necessary stakeholder groups through communication and dissemination support. Support for the policy activities provides rapid analysis of the impact of the developments on relevant levels (policy, technical, usage patterns) of e-IRG goals.
The activity takes the input generated in the phase 1 through the next two steps. Liaisons with research and other stakeholders focuses on identifying the key activities, developments and trends emerging in the world surrounding e-IRG. It facilitates dialogue about the interplay between the opportunities, goals and gaps related to the e-IRG vision and the surrounding legal, technical and socioeconomic framework. In phases 4 and 1 this ensures that the next iteration of the process will receive sufficient input.

EURO ARGO
2008-01-01
2010-06-30
2008-10-16
The Euro-Argo infrastructure will be a major component of the Argo global in situ ocean observatory. The Argo network is a global array of autonomous instruments measuring temperature and salinity over the upper 2000 m of the ocean. Argo is an indispensable component of the Global Ocean Observing System required to understand and monitor the role of the ocean in the Earth's climate system. Argo must be considered in its ensemble: not only the instruments, but also the logistics necessary for their preparation and deployments, field operations, the associated data streams and data centres.
Euro-Argo will develop and progressively consolidate the European component of the global network. Specific European interest also requires a somewhat increased sampling in regional seas. Overall, the Euro-Argo infrastructure should comprise 800 floats in operation at any given time. The maintenance of such an array would require Europe to deploy about 250 floats per year. The main objective of the Euro-Argo preparatory phase will be to undertake the preparatory work needed to ensure that by 2010 Europe will be able to deploy and operate an array of 800 floats and to provide a world-level service to the research (climate) and environment monitoring (e.g. GMES) communities.

BIHARNET
In 1998 BIHARNET (Academic Research Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina) was established by the University of Banja Luka, the two Mostar universities, the university of Sarajevo and the university of Tuzla with funding from the government of Slovenia.
Because of lack of budget, BIHARNET operation came to an end in 2000. In November 2007, the Federal Ministry of Communications and Transport, the Federal Ministry of Science and Education and BH Telecom announced their joined plan to revitalize the Bosnia-Herzegovina National Research and Education Network. However, a decision regarding revitalization of BIHARNET or creation of a new BiH NREN was not reached at that time.
BIHARNET has a 1 Gbps link to the SEREEN-2 node in Belgrade.

FEDERICA
Ana Bela Dias
2008-01-01
5180000
FEDERICA will create a European wide “technology agnostic” infrastructure made of Gigabit circuits, transmission equipment and computing nodes capable of virtualization to host experimental activities on new Internet architectures and protocols.
The FEDERICA network is based on the Research & Education multi-gigabit networks footprint. Circuits are terminated in Points of Presence (PoPs) of NRENs and GÉANT2, hosting FEDERICA nodes capable of virtualising hosts e.g. open source routers and end nodes. Virtual slices of FEDERICA’s infrastructure may be allocated to network researchers for testing even with disruptive experiments within a large production substrate. The researchers will have full control on the allocated virtual nodes and network slice and access network monitoring information.
In particular, FEDERICA will undertake research to:
- Understand and produce initial solutions on management and control of distributed, parallel, virtual networks which may communicate between them and with the general Internet;
- Develop experience and a model for managing and using virtual infrastructures as a combination of networks and systems;
- Open the infrastructure to any "application" type (application can be a test);
- Use, test and advance the tools and services being developed by GEANT2, NRENs and partners, in particular for end-to-end services;
- Enable the graceful implementation of new inter-domain service layer.

The project focuses on all needed preparatory actions to enable in the following phase the construction of a Research Infrastructure (RI) called Pan-European Research Infrastructure for Nano-Structures (PRINS), with the aim of enabling European innovative research for the ultimate scaling of electronics component and circuits. The platform will be truly interdisciplinary by allowing the convergence of top-down technology, which is today the main enabler of Moore's law (i.e. transistor scaling), with bottom-up methods derived from fundamental disciplines such as material physics, chemistry, biotechnology and particle electronics. The open access of this infrastructure provided to the scientific community will enable cross-disciplinary fertilization of academic and industrial competences in the areas of nanoelectronics, nanosystems, nanobiology, nanophotonics, etc. The consortium consists of European leading Research Centres, industrial partners and Public Authorities and Funding Agencies. Key activities include setting up a legal framework for the operation of the RI.

Design study of a European Facility for Advanced Seismic Testing
2008-09-01
Ana Bela Dias
2008-09-26
2011-08-31
Earthquakes regularly occur throughout the world, frequently causing catastrophic harm and injury and always resulting in significant damage and widespread disorganization in the area. Modern society is increasingly vulnerable to external hazards, it is readily apparent that, in developed countries, although the numbers of victims of major earthquakes is tending to drop, the costs of the consequences are constantly rising. It is therefore indispensable for Europe to intensify the research and development in this field.
This project aims at improving the capability of prediction of the behaviour of new or existing structures and equipment, and defining reliable and economic ways of retrofit. The strong R&D need in earthquake engineering must be accompanied by an in-depth consideration of research infrastructures. For the design study of a world class seismic testing facility, the work plan should follow a coherent set of objectives: Define the new testing facility, high performances, single-site, answering to modularity, flexibility, operating easiness, complementary to existing research infrastructures in Europe.

Association role type
Policy description of United Kingdom
The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the managing agent for the UK research councils HPC programme on behalf of the Office of Science and Technology (OST). The High Performance Computing Strategy Committee (HSC) advises the Research Councils and OST on HPC strategy.
HPCx is the national HPC service, which EPSRC has procured on the behalf of all the Research Councils in its role as Managing Agent. The HPCx service that became operational in December 2002 is provided by a consortium of the University of Edinburgh, Daresbury Laboratory of CCLRC, where the system is located, and IBM. The current system is an IBM pSeries p5-575/2560.
Besides the central HPCx service provided for all the research councils, individual research councils, universities and research institutes run HPC services for their own research communities.
In 2002 £53 million was invested for a 6-year period in the HPCx service for the whole UK research community. EPSRC will fund £48 million (£9 million come from the UK e-science programme), NERC £5 million and BBSRC will contribute on a “pay as you go” basis.
Information on the national HPC programme can be found at: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/hpc/
HECToR (High End Computing Terascale Resource) will be the next national high-end computing service. EPSRC signed in February 2007 two contracts, worth £113 million (€ 180 million), to provide this service during a 6-year period. The service is due to start in October 2007 and will have an initial theoretical peak capability of 60 Tflop/s, increasing to approximately 250 Tflop/s peak in October 2009 with a further up-grade planned for October 2011.
The initial system is a Cray XT4 with 11,328 cores and a 33.2 TB memory. The peak performance is 59 Tflops. The system will be installed at EPCC.
In 2000 the government allocated £120 million to a ‘e-Science’ programme. Part of this programme is a e-Science core programme with a budget of £35 million that includes grid development. In 2003 OST has allo-cated new funding for the e-Science programme for the period until 2006 making the total OST invest-ment in e-Science £213M.
The e-Science programme is overseen by a Steering Committee chaired by Professor David Wallace.
The UK networking policy is determined by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), a strategic advisory committee working on behalf of the funding bodies for further and higher education in the UK. The UK Research Councils are represented in JISC. JISC promotes innovative use of information technology and funds among others the network infrastructure. The 2006 budget is €77 million.
JISC intensified in September 2002 the collaboration with her Dutch pendant SURF to create a London – Amsterdam – Chicago optical network between JISC, SURF and Internet2 to enable research into leading edge networks and applications. In May 2003 HEFCE (Higher Education Funding Council for England) allocated £6.5 million in this UKLight initiative. UKLight is part of an international testbed for optical networking.

FP7
The Framework Programme 7 (FP7) is the current funding programme by the European Commission. There are two places in the programme where Grid computing is explicitely mentioned. The first is the eInfrastructures part of the socalled "Capacity" programme part. The second one is the "Challenge 1" of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT ) where it is listed under ""Service and Software Architectures, Infrastructures and Engineering". But because Grid computing is an infrastructure, it can also be part of project proposals in other parts of the programme. FP7 will run from 1 January 2007 and will expire in 2013.

The GÉANT2 network provides the high-performance, state-of-the-art network infrastructure that is fundamental to the European Union’s vision of a European Research Area (ERA). The network is the core activity of a coherent set of initiatives that seek to develop all aspects of European research and education networking. The project within which the network is being built and developed also includes an integrated research programme, the development of support services for network users, initiatives to monitor and address disparities in the level of development of research and education networking around Europe, and a comprehensive study into the future of European research and education networking.
The project’s overall objectives are:
- To plan, build and operate a multi-gigabit pan-European backbone research network interconnecting Europe's national research and education networks (NRENs), over which a suite of advanced services will be offered to meet the increasingly demanding requirements of Europe’s research and education community;
- To conduct joint research into the development of networking technologies and services, with the primary aim of developing ideas from concept to production service to directly serve the users of GÉANT2 and its connected NRENs;
- To support effectively and directly projects and users who have advanced networking requirements;
- To pursue initiatives targeted at closing the 'digital divide', through both in-depth analysis of the picture of research networking in developing areas and the provision of direct support;
- To examine the future of research networking, exploring the case for the sustaining of research and education networking beyond the conclusion of the project.

The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observation - Preparatory Phase (EMSO-PP) is a 4-year project with the main objective of establishing the legal and governance framework for EMSO, an infrastructure servicing scientists and other stakeholders in Europe and outside Europe for long-term deep water observation and investigation. The Preparatory Phase will handle all further actions towards the actual realisation of the infrastructure and its long-term management.
Moreover, it will promote the catalytic process and synergic effort at EC and national levels, coordinating and harmonising all the resources made available, in link with the Network of Excellence ESONET. One peculiarity of the EMSO infrastructure, among the ones indicated within ESFRI, is that it is geographically distributed around European waters from the Arctic to the Mediterranean Sea. EMSO cabled deep-sea observatories deployed on specific sites will allow for a basic scientific objective to make real-time long-term monitoring of environmental processes in the geosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere of European seas. The observatories will be organised in a unique management structure at European level which is part of an international endeavour in seafloor observatories.

Policy description of Czech Republic
In 1992 the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) defined a national policy for supercomputing. In 1994 5 systems were installed at university sites. These systems have since then been gradually replaced with funding from the Ministry of Education.
In 1992 the Ministry of Education provided funds to create the national academic network that became operational in 1993. In 1996 all Czech universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences established the CESNET association which is responsible for the operation of the network and its development. The development of the network is covered by the budgets of the Ministry of Education and the Czech Academy of Sciences and by grants from the Czech Grant Agency.
In May 2009 the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports appointed VŠB-Technical University Ostrava as national centre of excellence for HPC. VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava leads the IT4Innovations project in which also participate University of Ostrava, Silesian University, and Institute of Geonics of Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic. €29 million of the project will be used for the acquisition of a new supercomputer.

GRNET
2008-06-19
GRNET S.A. is a state owned company under the supervision of the General Secretariat of Research and Technology, Ministry of Development.
The Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET) is currently in its third phase (GRNET3) based on a fiber-owned network. Over 7000 km of optical fiber pairs have been acquired via long term IRU leasing. DWDM technology was chosen to light the fibers and establish up to 21x10 Gbps pipes interconnecting subscriber institutions in all major cities in Greece. GRNET3 links have been used to interconnect the 7 GRNET2 network main routers at 2.5 Gbps, in order to sustain the old network for the institutes with low bandwidth requirements. In parallel, institutes with 10 Gbps access requirements are gradually being connected to the central 10 Gbps aggregator in a star topology. In addition, on demand L2 interconnection services (mostly Gigabit Ethernet) between high-demand subscribers will be provided via multi-service SDH platforms and state of the art control plane technology.
Currently the connection to GEANT2 is at 2x10 Gbps and it is expected that GRNET joins the European dark fiber cloud in the near future.
GRNET connects all Greek universities and major research centres and provides services to the primary and secondary educational institutions.
GRNET3 is funded by the Ministry of Economy and Finance via the Ministry of Development. The budget for 2006-2008 is around €30 million.

The proposal for a major upgrade of the CESSDA Research Infrastructure is a response to the general principles and vision set out in the 2004 Blueprint for the European Research Observatory for the Humanities and Social Sciences. It will meet the goals set out in that report to strengthen interdisciplinary and cross-border collaboration and comparative research on a European dimension, enhance the creation of research infrastructure capacity in the less resourced European countries of today and it will increase the opportunity to improve knowledge on social processes. The project holds great potential in terms of advising European and national policy-makers on how to manage the challenges currently faced by the societies of Europe. Building on the existing operational structure of the Council of European Social Science Data Archives (CESSDA) network of data archives and its associated partners, this proposal for a major RI upgrade will seek to address the major gaps and deficiencies identified by the EROHS report on Research Infrastructures through the facilitation of access to and sharing of existing European and national data.

International Collaboration to Extend and Advance Grid Education
ICEAGE will deliver a programme of educational events about Grids. Its outcome will be the adoption by European Universities of courses in many disciplines to support the deployment and exploitation of e-Infrastructure. ICEAGE will ensure that citizens are well prepared to use e-Infrastructure in their private and professional lives. It will stimulate European educators by closely coupling the ICEAGE forum with a pioneering educational system, based on e-Infrastructure, involving a dynamic programme of events, shared strategies, information and material. The actions on Education and Training in ICEAGE are to be understood as actions on dissemination of knowledge (in the broader sense).

The European Social Survey (ESS) has three main objectives. Firstly, to produce rigorous trend data at a national and European level about people's social, political and moral values in the context of Europe's changing institutions; to remedy longstanding deficiencies in methods of cross-national social measurement, particularly in respect to public attitudes and to bring social indicators into closer focus as a means of monitoring the quality of life across European nations. ESS data and supporting documentation are freely and swiftly available to all and have already attracted over 13,000 registered users.
Many books and journal articles arising from the ESS have already appeared; many more are in preparation. Now starting its fourth biennial Round, the ESS is a pioneering example of the principles and practices behind the European Research Area, with funding from both the EC and over 20 Research Councils. We now seek to consolidate the achievements to date and prepare the project for its transition into an upgraded and sustainable Infrastructure. Although always envisaged as a time series, the future of the ESS has remained uncertain owing to a lack of sustained funding.

Enabling grids for e-Science
2008-08-19
2008-03-31
The Enabling Grids for E-sciencE project brings together scientists and engineers from more than 90 institutions in 32 countries world-wide to provide a seamless Grid infrastructure for e-Science that is available to scientists 24 hours-a-day. Conceived from the start as a four-year project, the second two-year phase started on 1 April 2006, and is funded by the European Commission.
Expanding from originally two scientific fields, high energy physics and life sciences, EGEE now integrates applications from many other scientific fields, ranging from geology to computational chemistry. Generally, the EGEE Grid infrastructure is ideal for any scientific research especially where the time and resources needed for running the applications are considered impractical when using traditional IT infrastructures.
The EGEE Grid consists of over 20,000 CPU available to users 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in addition to about 5 Petabytes (5 million Gigabytes) of storage, and maintains 20,000 concurrent jobs on average. Having such resources available changes the way scientific research takes place. The end use depends on the users' needs: large storage capacity, the bandwidth that the infrastructure provides, or the sheer computing power available.

The neuGRID project aims to deploy e-Infrastructures (EC-funded MammoGrid and AddNeuroMed's NeuBase) to enable the European neuroscience community to carry out research required for the pressing study of degenerative brain diseases to build a new user-friendly Grid-based research e-Infrastructure (neuGRID), where the collection/archiving of large amounts of imaging data is paired with computationally intensive data analyses.
This proposal will initially provide neuroscientists with the capability to identify neurodegenerative disease markers through the analysis of 3D magnetic resonance brain images via the provision of sets of distributed medical and Grid services and later to provide a general, expandable infrastructure of services for other medical applications. neuGRID will be compliant with acknowledged EU and international standards regarding data collection, data management, and Grid construction. Of the two deployed infrastructure, MammoGrid will provide knowledge related to the middleware and upperware that will allow applications to talk to the Grid, and AddNeuroMed that related to the collection/archiving/retrieval of multicentre clinical data, biomedical images and computerized image analysis.

ANAEE is a design study that aims at implementing a new concept of integrated research infrastructures in Europe for research on agro-ecosystems and natural ecosystems and environment.
This infrastructure consists in interfacing three types of platforms:
(i)The in situ Long Term Experimental Plateforms which consists in developing experiments for the main type of land use systems (arable crops, grasslands, forest, marchlands, heathlands ), where different types of land management are imposed for a long term and where the state variables of the system are monitored for long term in conjunction with the measurement of the environmental fluxes to atmosphere and hydrosphere.
(ii)The in vitro ECOTRON equipments where blocks of ecosystems of different size could be introduced within controlled environment. Since feedbacks between the plants and the soil responses take time to establish, experiments often need to last a few years. An alternative use of Ecotrons is to analyse the physiology of blocks of ecosystems which have been subjected in situ for years to various treatments within LTEP platforms. In that case, Ecotrons can be seen as ecological analysers receiving samples for analysis.
(iii) The in silico Database and Modelling platform should complete the system by developing facilities for sharing data bases among Europe.

The Large Hadron Collider upgrade (SLHC) is the project with highest priority in the European strategy for particle physics document, unanimously approved by the CERN Council in July 2006. The SLHC, with expected 1 B budget, includes the upgrade of specific elements of the LHC accelerator, major upgrades in the accelerator injector complex, as well as upgrades to the two high-luminosity experiments ATLAS and CMS. It will result in a tenfold increase of the LHC luminosity.
The Preparatory Phase project of the LHC-upgrade (SLHC-PP), co-funded by the EC, comprises Coordinating, Support and Technical activities. The Coordinating activities within SLHC-PP play a central role for the organisation of the new accelerator- and detector-upgrade collaborations, putting in place project structures and collaboration management tools, ultimately aiming for agreements on work-sharing and funding for the implementation phase. Support activities address upfront priority safety issues in the radiation protection domain

2004-01-01
Lofar is A Next-Generation Astronomical Telescope for the New Millennium. LOFAR is building a major new multi-element, interferometric, imaging telescope designed for the 10-240 MHz frequency range. Lofar will be a Grid resource and will in addition include a lot of number crunching power. Lofar is a large scientifc instrument that consists of thousands of antennae that will be combined in a Wide Area Sensor network linked to a cluster supercomputer. Lofar will be used as a telescope, but also for "precision agriculture". The tight integration of a sensor-data collector and supercomputer makes Lofar an example of a next generation of Sensor Grid.

Grid4All (STREP) will bring Grid computing to millions of users beyond the academic and industrial communities. It combines elements of peer-to-peer and Grid technologies in an open Grid middleware framework. Secure peer-to-peer techniques will be used to federate large numbers of small-scale resources into large-scale Grids. The proposal addresses the areas of autonomic software, Grid economics, and semantics.
e-NMR
e-NMR aims at deploying and unifying the NMR computational infrastructure in system biology.
NMR plays an important role in life sciences (biomolecular NMR), and structural biology in particular, at both European and international levels. Our main objective is to optimize and extend the use of the NMR Research Infrastructures of EU-NMR through the implementation of an e-Infrastructure in order to provide the biomolecular NMR user community with a platform integrating and streamlining the computational approaches necessary for NMR data analysis and structural modelling (e-NMR). Access to the e-NMR infrastructure will be provided through a portal integrating commonly NMR software and GRID technology.

The Preparatory Phase for a pan-European Biobanking and Biomolecular Resources Research Infrastructure (BBMRI) will focus on technical, legal, governance, and financial issues to prepare to construct BBMRI, building on existing biobanks, resources and technologies, specifically complemented with innovative components and properly embedded into European scientific, ethical, legal and societal frameworks, provide the concept for a key resource to increase excellence and efficacy in biomedical sciences, drug development and public health, expand and secure competitiveness of European research and industry in a global context, develop a sustainable financial framework.
Biomedical quality-assessed samples and data as well as biomolecular resources and molecular analysis tools are essential for academic and industry-driven research to treat and prevent human diseases. Although currently established national biobanks and biomolecular resources are a unique European strength, valuable collections typically suffer from fragmentation of the European biobanking-related research community. This hampers the collation of biological samples and data from different biobanks required to achieve sufficient statistical power.

Commercial Exploitation of Grid Technologies and Services
Final
In this report published by the European Commission, prepared by SCF Associates, it is recommended to form a European Grid Agency. The role of this agency would be to take primary responsability for all the legal and market support functions necessary to build a European Grid industry. According to the report, the European IT industry has different characteristics from those in other parts of the world. In Europe, a few larger integrators and many SME's dominate the industry, with large vendors being more or less absent. Building complex Grids also requires having good solutions to the IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) problems. Current licence schemes vary, and it is not clear which scheme or schemes best fit a European Grid industry, although it should have some level of openness to it. The legal situation with software patents is also quite different here than in the USA. A big part of the report is devoted to analyse the IPR situation. A European Grid Agency should develop and support the creation and promotion of a common reference model and toolkit for commercial products. Is it all worth the while? Yes, the report forecasts the European Grid Market could value euro 9 billion in 2011.

EuroVO-AIDA
EuroVO-AIDA aims at unifying the digital data collections of European astronomy, integrating their access mechanisms with evolving e-technologies, and enhancing the science extracted from these datasets. The concept of a Virtual Observatory (VObs) is that all the world's astronomical data should feel like it sits on the astronomer's desk top, analysable with a user selected workbench of tools and made available through standard interfaces across the whole range of astronomical research topics. VObs is embraced as a world-wide community-based initiative with the potential to transform and restructure the way astronomy research is done.
Euro-VO is the European implementation of this idea, and the EuroVO-AIDA project is proposed to lead the transition of Euro-VO into an operational phase. EuroVO-AIDA integrates the technology, networking and service activities of Euro-VO into a fully functioning eInfrastructure. It will establish a Registry of VObs-compliant resources; support the network of data centres in deploying the VObs e-Infrastructure; co-ordinate development of user tools for science extraction; and disseminate results to the astronomical community and identify their needs. The VObs interoperability standards will be updated taking into account feedback from implementation by data centre and from science usage. Specific emphasis will be placed on data access and data models, and on assessing innovative use of emerging technologies such as Web 2.0 by data centres for continuous improvement of the eInfrastructure.

EATRIS
The European Advanced Translational Research Infrastructure in medicine
5480000
2008-01-01
Efficient translation of research discoveries into industrial application is an essential element to maintain Europe's competitiveness in the biomedical and health industry. The main bottleneck is the lack and the fragmented nature of essential research infrastructure and know-how, leading to unacceptable delays and/or preventing the development of new innovative medicines. The aim of EATRIS is to fill this gap by developing a European Advanced Translation Research InfraStructure consisting of key preclinical and clinical components necessary to support the development of new diagnostic or therapeutic strategies at all stages of the biomedical R&D-process.

OMII-Europe
The OMII-Europe vision is to harvest open-source, Web-Services-based, grid software from across Europe and to supply these key grid services in a form that will enable them to interoperate across heterogeneous infrastructures, in particular GLite, UNICORE and Globus.
The emphasis is on the re-engineering of software components rather than on the development of new technology. OMII-Europe will develop a repository of quality-assured Grid services running on these existing major Grid infrastructures.

AssessGrid (STREP) fosters the adoption of risk management into the Grid, focusing on the development and integration of methods, metrics and analysis tools enabling Service Level Agreement (SLA) negotiations. The proposal addresses risk awareness and management, self-organising, fault-tolerant actions and capacity planning, closing the gap between the development of SLAs as concept and as a widely accepted tool for commercial Grid uptake.

PESI
PESI provides standardised and authoritative taxonomic information by integrating and securing Europe's taxonomically authoritative species name registers and nomenclators (name databases) that underpin the management of biodiversity in Europe.
PESI defines and coordinates strategies to enhance the quality and reliability of European biodiversity information by integrating the infrastructural components of four major community networks on taxonomic indexing into a joint work programme. This will result in functional knowledge networks of taxonomic experts and regional focal points, which will collaborate on the establishment of standardised and authoritative taxonomic (meta-) data. In addition PESI will coordinate the integration and synchronisation of the European taxonomic information systems into a joint e-infrastructure and the set up of a common user-interface disseminating the pan-European checklists and associated user-services results.

BalticGrid-II
The Baltic Grid Second Phase (BalticGrid-II) project is designed to increase the impact, adoption and reach, and to further improve the support of services and users of the recently created e-Infrastructure in the Baltic States.
This will be achieved by an extension of the BalticGrid infrastructure to Belarus; interoperation of the gLite-based infrastructure with UNICORE and ARC based Grid resources in the region; identifying and addressing the specific needs of new scientific communities such as nano-science and engineering sciences; and by establishing new Grid services for linguistic research, Baltic Sea environmental research, data mining tools for communication modelling and bioinformatics.
The e-Infrastructure, based on the successful BalticGrid project, will be fully interoperable with the pan-European e-Infrastructures established by EGEE, EGEE associated projects, and the planned EGI, with the goal of a sustained e-Infrastructure in the Baltic Region.
The present BalticGrid e-Infrastructure of 26 clusters in five countries is envisaged to grow, both in capacity and capability of its computing resources. The consortium is composed of 13 leading institutions in seven countries, with 7 institutions in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, 2 in Belarus, 2 in Poland, and one each in Sweden and Switzerland.
The overall vision is to support and stimulate scientists and services used in the Baltic region to conveniently access critical networked resources both within Europe and beyond, and thereby enable the formation of effective research collaborations.

Policy description of Norway
2009-01-15
Access to the national resources is by application. A Resource Allocation Committee has been established by the RCN that evaluates the applications and decides on the allocation of computing time to research projects. Researchers can apply twice per year. Special procedures exist for large applications. The universities that host the facilities also have procedures for access to the local resources.
41000
4.6
The national HPC policy is set by the Research Council of Norway (RCN), in particular the eVITA Programme under the Division for Science of the RCN. An Advisory Board advises the eVITA Programme Board on e-Infrastructure.
The national policy aims at providing a modern e-Infrastructure in an international and competitive setting for education and research at Norwegian universities, colleges and research organizations, and for operational forecasting at the Meteorological Institute. This includes powerful and cost-effective resources for computation and storage, as well as support services that enable the efficient utilization of these resources.
The eVITA Programme was established late 2005 and published its first policy document on e-Infrastructure in February 2007.
The Notur II project implements the national HPC infrastructure. Notur II is a project under eVITA. The project consortium consists of six partners: UNINETT Sigma (coordinator), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the University of Bergen, the University of Oslo, the University of Tromsø, and the Meteorological Institute. The four university partners host the computing facilities. UNINETT Sigma is a subsidiary of the NREN UNINETT. The NOTUR II project will cover the period 2005-2014.
The minimum guaranteed funding from the RCN is ~€2.7 million per year. The partners that host the supercomputer resources contribute with local funding and in-kind.

Policy description of Sweden
The Swedish National Allocations Committee (SNAC) regulates the use of national computational, grid, visualisation and data warehousing facilities through evaluation of applications for such resources. It also stimulates the innovative use of these resources. SNA issues calls for proposal every 6 months. The SNIC centres also allocate resources to local users.
The Swedish Research Council (VR) funds through the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) six national HPC centres: C3SE, HPC2N, LUNARC, NSC, PDC and UPPMAX. SNIC is responsible for the strategy and the development of HPC resources in Sweden. €4.5 of the yearly budget of €8.5 million is provided by the Government.
In December 2006 the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation (KAW) awarded € 2 million for investment in HPC resources.

EU fusion for ITER applications
The EUFORIA project will provide a comprehensive framework and infrastructure for core and edge transport and turbulence simulation, linking grid and High Performance Computing (HPC), to the fusion modelling community. The project will enhance the modelling capabilities for ITER and DEMO sized plasmas through the adaptation, optimization and integration of a set of critical applications for edge and core transport modelling targeting different computing paradigms as needed (serial and parallel grid computing and HPC). Deployment of both a grid service and a High Performance computing services are essential to the project.
A novel aspect is the dynamic coupling and integration of codes and applications running on a set of heterogeneous platforms into a single coupled framework through a workflow engine a mechanism needed to provide the necessary level integration in the physics applications. This strongly enhances the integrated modelling capabilities of fusion plasmas and will at the same time provide new computing infrastructure and tools to the fusion community in general.

Towards a common e-Science infrastructure for the European and Asian grids
Ana Bela Dias
2008-04-01
EUAsiaGrid main goal is to pave the way towards an Asian e-Science Grid Infrastructure, in synergy with the other European Grid initiatives in Asia, namely EGEE-III via its Asia Federation, and both the EUChinaGRID and EU-IndiaGRID projects and their eventual follow on efforts.
Taking advantage of the existing global Grid technologies, with the specific emphasis on the European experience with the gLite middleware and applications running on top of it, the project plans to encourage federating approaches across scientific disciplines and communities. EUAsiaGrid will act as a support action, aiming to define and implement a policy to promote the gLite middleware developed within the EU EGEE project across Asian countries.

Grid-Ireland
Grid-Ireland
Grid-Ireland started in 1999. Grid resources were provided by Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, NUI Galway and Queens University Belfast.
Grid-Ireland is the national computational grid. It is the umbrella for Irish virtual organisations, e.g. CosmoGrid and WebCom-G. It provides operational support for national and international grid access. It already connects 18 Irish third-level institutions, and expects to connect the remaining 8 soon. The grid infrastructure provides 384 processors. The grid is managed by TCD. Funding is project-based, e.g. EU €0.4 million, CosmoGrid €0.5 million and WebCom-G €1.5 million.

HellasGrid
HellasGrid
2008-03-26
The Local Office of the Information Society – Ministry of Economy and Finance established in December 2002 the HellasGrid task force, which was the nucleus of the Hellasgrid National Grid Initiative. Its task was to define the basic strategy and guidelines for the Greek national, regional and international grid activities. The outcome of the above was documented in the Hellasgrid strategy document http://www.hellasgrid.gr/engine/index.php?op=modload&modname=Downloads&action=downloadsviewfile&ctn=17&language=en
The above work was funded with around €0,5 million. At the end of 2003 the 20 partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which established the first instance of the Hellasgrid National Grid Initiative, coordinated by GRNET.
At the end of 2004 the Hellasgrid national grid infrastructure project was approved with a duration of 2 years and a budget of around €2 million. The project has developed the computing, storage and virtual collaboration infrastructures, complemented with operation, middleware, security, training and dissemination activities. The infrastructure of HellasGrid consists of 6 clusters with a total of 850 CPUs and around 100 TB of storage. The clusters are located in Athens (3) (Demokritos, NDC and IASA), Thessaloniki (AUTH), Patras (CTI-CEID) and Heraclion-Crete (ICS-FORTH). http://www.hellasgrid.gr/infrastructure/
The Hellasgrid MoU was extended in scope and parntership and was signed at the end of 2007 among 25 leading institutes, which officially plays the role of the NGI. Two committees similar to the Hellasgrid Task Force ones were composed, a governing one and a scientific one, while GRNET acts as the coordinating partner.
The Hellasgrid project has been extended until the end of 2008, with some additional funding in the order of €1 million.

Diligent
The DILIGENT project is creating an advanced test-bed that will allow virtual e-Science communities to share knowledge and collaborate in a secure, coordinated, dynamic and cost-effective way.
The DILIGENT test-bed will be built by integrating Grid and Digital Library (DL) technologies. Merging of these different technologies will lay the foundations for a next generation e-Science knowledge infrastructure with many different research and industrial applications.
The test-bed will be demonstrated and validated by two complementary real-life application scenarios: one from the environmental e-science domain and one from the cultural heritage domain. The first user community is composed of representatives from leading organisations that operate in the environmental sector; the second consists of scholars, distributed all over the world working together in a three-year project to merge the medical, humanity, social science and communication research areas.

Ana Bela Dias
DEISA (Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomputing Applications) is a consortium of European national supercomputing centres that jointly operate a distributed terascale supercomputing facility using grid technologies.
In DEISA2, activities and services relevant for Application Enabling, Operation, and Technologies are continued and enhanced, as these are indispensable for the effective support of world-leading computational sciences in the area of supercomputing. The service provisioning model is extended from one that supports a single project to one supporting Virtual European Communities. Collaborative activities will be carried out with new European and other world-leading initiatives. Of strategic importance is the cooperation with the PACE initiative which is preparing for the installation of a limited number of leadership-class tier-0 supercomputers in Europe. The principal partners are: CINECA (Italy), CSC (Finland), ECMWF (UK), EPCC (UK), FZJ (Germany), IDRIS (France), RZG (Germany), SARA (the Netherlands), LRZ (Germany), HLRS (Germany) and BSC (Spain).
The DEISA supercomputing environment incorporates several different platforms and operating systems. It includes IBM AIX on Power5-6, IBM Linux on PowerPC, IBM BlueGene/P, SGI Linux on Itanium, Cray XT and NEC vectror systems: RZG – 14592 cores, LRZ - 9728 cores, BSC – 10240 cores, CINECA – 5632 cores, CSC – 8760 cores, FZJ – 66848 cores, IDRIS – 1800 cores, SARA – 5248 cores, EPCC – 11520 cores and HLRS – 576 cores. The aggregate peak computing capacity is close to 1 Pflop/s .
DEISA uses an internal network with reserved bandwidth and 10 Gbps connections provided by GEANT and the NRENs to connect the supercomputers.
The DEISA project received €14 million funding from the FP6 program for the period May 2004 until April 2008. DEISA was extended to eDEISA (extended DEISA) to complement the DEISA research infrastructure project. eDEISA received a EU grant of €7 million for the period June 2006 until May 2008.
The DEISA2 project will run for three years from May 2008 until April 2011 and has received a funding of €10.24 million from the FP7 programme.

D4SCIENCE
2008-08-27
The main objective of D4SCIENCE is to deploy the e-Infrastructures built so far by the EGEE and DILIGENT projects so that they address the needs of several new scientific communities affiliated with the broad disciplines of Environmental Monitoring and Fishery Resource Management. These e-Infrastructures, which offer mechanisms that concurrently exploit networks, grids, and data in a seamless fashion, will enable scientific communities to operate within a coherent pan-European model, regardless of the location of their research facilities.
The project will progressively consolidate and expand these open e-Infrastructures to better address the needs of the two major target disciplines (which have challenging differences but also interesting commonalities). Thousands of scientists will obtain increasingly more facilities for creating Virtual Research Environments based on shared computation, storage, and generic service resources offered by EGEE and DILIGENT at a European level, as well as on data and domain-specific service resources offered by large international organizations, such as ESA, FAO, and CGIAR.

Enabling desktop grids for e-Science
Ana Bela Dias
2008-09-23
Grid systems are currently being used and adopted by a growing number of user groups and diverse application domains. However, there still exist many scientific communities whose applications require much more computing resources than existing Grids like EGEE can provide.
The main objective of EDGeS is to support these new communities by providing the necessary extensions for existing Grid infrastructures to address the specific needs in these new scientific communities within a coherent pan-European model, regardless of the location of their research facilities; with the adaptation of their applications to the enhanced Grid infrastructure; and through the provision of standard APIs and Grid application development tools that facilitate the adaptation of their application to the enhanced Grid infrastructure.
In order to support the specific needs of these scientific communities EDGeS will interconnect the existing EGEE Grid infrastructure with existing Desktop Grid (DG) systems in a strong partnership with EGEE. Service Grids (SGs) like EGEE are more flexible than DGs and can accommodate a broader variety of applications, however, they are much more expensive to maintain.

The Swedish HPC Landscape 2006-2009, Visions and Roadmaps
The Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) is a metacentre for high performance
computing (HPC) and was initiated in 2002. SNIC has 6 member centres strategically located
to provide strong national HPC services. The first affiliation contract period for the participating
centres was 2003-2005. The objective of this document is to form the basis of the SNIC strategy for
the coming contract period.
The document puts the Swedish HPC infrastructure in the context of the current trends in com-
putational sciences as well as service and hardware developments. The document also analyses
the resources needed to provide Swedish researchers with a competitive HPC infrastructure. The
Swedish HPC landscape is then painted from the perspective of services provided to users and the
infrastructure needed to provide these services is deduced. Road maps outlining how SNIC will
implement the landscape are also given for each of the contributing components. These road maps
are the blueprints for the future infrastructure and define the development of the Swedish high per-
formance computing landscape for the period 2006-2009.

The national policy on high-speed networking is determined by the NREN UNINETT together with the Ministry of Education and Research. The policy is to let the national high-capacity network remain well ahead of what is commercially available with regards to capacity, uptime and functionality. The capacity should be over-provisioned to allow for the development of new applications and experimental usage. A hybrid network is planned for and should be in line with NORDUnet and GEANT2. The national network UNINETT connects more than 200 organizations for education and research. Its backbone operates at 2.5 Gbps. International connectivity is through a 10 Gbps connection to NORDUnet. UNINETTS’ 2008 budget is €13.8 million. It is a combination of user funding (68%) and central government funding (32%). The funding for the policy implementation is integrated in other UNINETT expenses.

Among the most significant scientific inquiries defined by Science (July 2005) was whether or not scientists will be able to build a laser of intensity sufficient to rip photons into electron-positron pairs. ELI will be the first extreme light infrastructure to approach this limit. It represents the consensual effort of 13 European countries, more than 50 laboratories and numerous international collaborators. Dedicated to the fundamental study of laser-matter interaction in a new and unsurpassed, ultra-relativistic regime, this facility will be based on an exawatt-class laser delivering ultra-short (down to fractions of attosecond) pulses at least 100 times more powerful than any other existing or planned.
ELI will strive to be a highly multidisciplinary platform with specialized laser, particle or radiation beam lines dedicated to wide scientific fields, from fundamental ones: atomic, particle, nuclear, gravitational, and cosmology, to societal ones. ELI will for instance benefit in life science, nanotechnology material science, or environment. ELI will finally foster technology transfers, as well as education and training. The ELI preparatory phase aims at establishing all the elements for the start of a successful construction and operation of the facility.

MNTEE
The FP6/Infrastructure project MNT-Europe (RII3-CT-2004-506231) has led to the creation of a unique distributed platform for research and development in the field of Micro and Nano Technologies (MNT), based on the national facilities of Léti (F), CSEM (CH), IZM-M and IISB Fraunhofer (D), IMEC (B) and Tyndall (Ir) research institutes. The networking and Joint Research Activities performed during this project have highlighted the strengths and been able to pinpoint the remaining weaknesses of this Alliance.
The basic idea of this proposal is to complete in the most efficient way this integration, based on the experience of this Alliance defined between major partners. Moreover, this will allow in a further step to aggregate new European R&D partners into a very robust core. Basically, three main activities will be dealt with: global management of technical, strategic and commercial joint activities, with both consolidation of common strategy and growth (based on expertise from mixed groups of technical experts, managers and commercial people), and the refinement in the coordination of operation plans (and a two step strategy with respect to the industrial world and the academic one, in view of future international access activities).

European Grid Initative Design Study
Ad Emmen/Ana Bela Dias
The European Grid Initiative Design Study (EGI_DS) represents an effort to establish a sustainable pan-European grid infrastructure. This project should enable the next leap in research infrastructures, thereby supporting collaborative scientific discoveries in the European Research Area. The main foundations of EGI are the National Grid Initiatives (NGIs), which operate the grid infrastructures in each country. EGI will link existing NGIs and will actively support the setup and initiation of new NGIs. The goal of the EGI Design Study (EGI_DS) is to evaluate use cases for the applicability of a coordinated effort, to identify processes and mechanisms for establishing EGI, to define the structure of a corresponding body, and ultimately to initiate the construction of the EGI organization.

RBNet
RBNet/RUNNet – the Russian Backbone Network/Russian Universities Network – provides connectivity to the universities and the research community in Russia. The development and operation of RBNet/RUNNet are provided by the state budget and economic activities of the Russian Institute for Public Networks (RIPN). Along with connected regional networks RBNet infrastructure covers over 50 regions of the Russian Federation. The basic access points are located in St. Petersburg, Moscow, Rostov-na-Donu, Samara, Nizhniy Novgorod, Ekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Obninsk and Khabarovsk. The link between Moscow and St. Petersburg is at 10 Gbps. Each of these nodes is by itself the centre of a star-shaped regional network. The typical backbone capacity is at 10 Gbps. RBNet has a 2.5 Gbps link to GÉANT, a 10 Gbps connection to NORDUnet and a 10 Gbps link to Netherlight. The 2008 budget is €9.5 million. It is provided by the government (80%) and the users.

Virtual Organisations in builsing construction often consist of dozens of contractors and subcontracters in a complex network. Delegation of work and responsibilities are often not very well defined and hence is an error prone process than can lead to considerable costs. The goal of the BauVOGrid project is to increase the operationalibility of a real "Bau-VO" by applying a building-Grid. BauVOGrid will built an authentication and authorisation infrastructure on top of the basic D-Grid and combine this into a coherent management infrastructire for Virtual Organisation (VO) processes. All types of resoruces can be combined and presented in the office or at a construction site. Four key technologies are being integrated to achieve this result: D-Grid, Semantic Web, Process managemetn and mobile information management.

EuroVo-DCA
The concept of a Virtual Observatory (VObs) is that all the world's astronomical data should feel like it sits on the astronomer's desk top, analysable with a user selected workbench of tools and made available through a standard interface. The VObs concept has the potential to transform and re-structure the way astronomy research is done, and the Virtual Observatory is a worldwide community-based initiative. Euro-VO is a specifically European implementation of this idea that will produce a unified virtual data and service resource (a data and service grid) with the ability to perform complex data discovery and manipulation tasks across the whole range of astronomical research topics.
The Euro-VO Data Centre Alliance, an essential component of the Euro-VO, populates the VObs with data produced by the European astronomy infrastructures. The EuroVO-DCA project will co-ordinate the national and European Agencies VO initiatives, to implement networking of European data centres, disseminate knowledge and good practice about the VObs technical framework, organise feedback from implementation of interoperability standards, prepare the inclusion of theoretical astronomy in the VObs framework, seek coordination with national and international projects for computational Grids, and help data centres from beyond the partners' countries to participate in the VObs endeavour.

AUGERACCESS
Integrating Auger Observatory and European Research Institutions into a world-wide Grid
2009-11-01
AUGERACCESS is a project dedicated to improving the access capabilities of European research groups working on the Pierre Auger Observatory. Located in a remote place in the Pampa Amarilla in Argentina, the Observatory is designed to measure the flux of ultra-high energy cosmic ray particles with unprecedented accuracy and statistical significance. It is the largest existing infrastructure in this research field. The upgrading of the connectivity between the Auger Observatory and European research institutions will allow rapid access to the data collected at the Observatory thus enhancing the potential of the European groups in data processing and analysis.

An easy way to access Grid resources
A-WARE (STREP) aims at developing a stable and commercially exploitable technology able to give easy access to Grid resources via a web thin-client approach based on user-friendly interfaces, hiding the complexity of the underlying Grid middleware. The proposal is based on the Grid portal EnginFrame and on Unicore/GS technologies.
