Bull revolutionizes the vision of the data centre with mobull, its latest-generation 'plug & boot' container
Les Clayes sous Bois 16 November 2009 Featuring significant processing power, very high levels of density and flexibility, rapid implementation, and a design based on the Bio Data Centre concept, mobull liberates the traditional data centre from everything that is holding it back, using a powerful combination of containers and leading-edge technologies. As a result, mobull provides organisations with a whole new response to their computer simulation, data processing and storage needs - with no need for compromises.

For all kinds of businesses, the growth in demand for processing power and storage capacity involves making fundamental changes to the IT architecture, to increase the density of infrastructure, servers and storage devices. In parallel, energy and cooling requirements are drastically increasing, while at the same time organisations are trying to reduce their costs, in order to prepare themselves for the post-crisis landscape. mobull is Bull's solution to effectively reconciling all these issues.

The mobull container is, in effect, a complete, latest-generation data centre, whose component parts enable the customer to achieve ultra-high density: delivering over 160 Teraflops of power from just under 30m2 (320 square foot) of floor space. A single container can host up to 15 19'' racks set out in five rows of three racks. In this configuration, each rack produces some 40kW, equivalent to the power of 20 electric cookers, in the space usually occupied by just one, with all this heat dissipated using liquid cooling technologies.

The solutions offered with mobull combine industry standards and Bull's own advanced solutions, which mean that the container can not only incorporate systems designed and developed by Bull, but also the majority of servers and storage systems available on the market.

Whether organisations are looking to implement a whole new data centre or extend the power of an existing facility, using mobull containers means they can avoid having to make a major investment in buildings, along with the many regulatory issues related to the constructing of cooling units and data centre power supplies. The flexibility of the new containers mean that they offer unique facilities when it comes to transporting and implementing them, whether in a building or even outside: all that's needed is an electrical supply, a water supply and a parking space. Three further, even more significant facts about mobull containers are that they can be delivered, ready to run, in just eight weeks.

This means mobull containers are a particularly adaptable solution, which customers can either buy outright or lease as and when they need to, while at the same time maximizing the value of their existing hardware which can also be incorporated into the mobull rack system. Another advantage of this optimum scalability is that it allows customers to rethinking their IT infrastructure for disaster recovery, placing it close to an existing data centre and complementing that facility. Bull can also deliver data and applications immediately, in close proximity to the scene of a military, government or humanitarian operation or even in an area hit by a natural disaster.

Fully thermally insulated, water and 'shockproof', mobull containers can be set up in extreme conditions - outside or on an off-shore drilling platform, for example. Because they are so easy to move around, they offer unique possibilities in terms of mobility and can also deployed in areas where energy costs are lower for the enterprise.

The technologies that Bull has developed also deliver significant reductions in the consumption of key resources:

  • In terms of floor space: thanks to their extremely high density
  • In terms of electricity consumption
  • And finally, in terms of cooling and air-conditioning, thanks in particular to the use of an autonomous cooling system that operates independently from the server and storage technologies being used. This unique system - which requires no external air-conditioning - helps to cut costs and installation times. Power supplies and connectivity have been specially designed to enable multiple technologies to be supported easily and quickly.
