Supporting software professionals using Grid technology
Geneva 20 March 2009 The ETICS system provides an 'out of the box' build and test system that helps software professionals configure, build and test their software. The current ETICS system is the result of three years of project activities co-funded by the European Commission, namely ETICS and ETICS 2 (ETICS 2 will end in March 2010). During these three years, continuous refinements to the system have been made thanks to the collaboration with its users. The main users are EGEE and D4Science teams. Projects such as UNICORE, KnowARC, CASTOR and StoRM are evaluating ETICS build and test capabilities.

The ETICS system automates the software development process as much as possible exploiting Grid software and distributed computing infrastructures. It provides tools and resources to configure, manage and analyse build and test runs.

ETICS system supports software managers, developers and testers in many of their day-to-day tasks, simplifying complex and often repetitive activities such as integration, building and testing.

"Thanks to ETICS", stated ETICS user Pasquale Pagano, D4Science technical director, "we have not only reduced the build and integration nightmare activity in a simple configuration activity, we have also included in the periodic build the execution of tests and the packaging of the software according to a standard format."

The ETICS system, after its latest improvements, offers a higher performance of its services and additional capabilities dedicated to software developers and testers. In particular, ETICS is developing a new functionality to design and run complex tests over distributed networks, a feature rare to find even in high-end commercial tests management applications.

Soon the ETICS system will implement the Automated-Quality Certification Model known as A-QCM to support its users in automatically evaluating and certifying their software against quality aspects like functionality, reliability, maintainability and portability.

The ETICS system user community now includes 35 projects using or evaluating its services. New users can contact the ETICS support team at etics-support@cern.ch . For more information you can visit http://www.eticsproject.eu
