Grid MP saves millions, independent report reveals
Lisle 26 August 2008

A white paper published by The FactPoint Group, a Silicon Valley-based research and consulting firm, reveals millions in financial benefits gained by a Fortune 100 company using Univa UD's Grid MP software.

The report quantifies the benefits gained by the company, a top 5 global pharmaceutical giant, who installed Grid MP to accelerate their high-performance computing (HPC) applications. For this company, the total economic benefits exceeded $3.7 million in the first year of implementation, with savings of over $3.3 million annually after the first year.

"We've always known, from direct customer feedback and informal estimates, that Grid MP is a product that delivers deep financial benefits. But it's certainly gratifying to have this validated by a 3rd party analysis", stated Jason Liu, CEO of Univa UD. "Univa UD is all about better performance for a better price. Clearly, as this paper shows, with Grid MP our customers stand to enjoy huge gains in many areas beyond the obvious reductions in hardware costs."

The study calculates financial benefits in several categories including: hardware costs, operating costs to run hardware, software licensing, routine tasks automated, regulatory compliance and quality/innovation improvements.

"I was surprised at the number of areas in which this technology delivers economic benefits", stated Tim Clark, partner at The FactPoint Group and author of the white paper and analysis. "I think most people make the assumption that Grid technology simply replaces hardware, so that's the main area where ROI gets estimated. But it actually goes way beyond that."

"In fact, hardware purchase avoidance only represents 5% of the total first year savings for this company, and is not factored in at all for the millions in savings after year one", added Tim Clark.

While the customer in this case is a pharmaceutical company, the document's findings also address benefits that can be gained by utilizing Grid MP in other industries. In many areas, research operations are moving from physical environments - labs, the outdoors, design and animation studios - to software environments. The processing power of Grid computing enables this physical to virtual transition and ensures that end users' performance is optimal while costs are kept to a minimum.

Grid MP is a leading product for building distributed computing environments from non-dedicated resources and a dominant product of choice for companies in the life sciences field where performance and speed are imperative for data-intensive computing. With the increased capacity made available by Grid MP, companies can increase both the speed and scope of HPC processing, tackling bigger computing jobs than they could before, to improve the precision and quality of work.
