Cray plans to begin shipping Cray XT5 supercomputer systems with the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, codenamed "Shanghai", in early 2009. This enhanced processor, built on 45nm process technology, is designed to provide significant benefits in energy efficiency, increased performance compared to previous generation AMD Opteron processors, and investment protection.

"Cray expects the new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, based on AMD's Direct Connect Architecture, to enable excellent performance scaling on high performance computing applications in combination with the unique Cray SeaStar interconnect", stated Cray Chief Technology Officer Steve Scott. "We look forward to delivering this capability to our Cray XT5 customers."
Cray customers are already achieving breakthrough scientific and engineering results with AMD Opteron processor-based Cray XT systems. The new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor is designed to help customers to enhance performance and minimize power consumption without altering their datacenter infrastructures, compared to previous AMD Opteron processor-based servers.
"AMD is committed to developing processor technology that addresses some of the world's most computationally complex and sophisticated problems", stated Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Workstation Division, AMD. "Combined with the upgradeability and scalability of the Cray XT5 system, our new Quad-Core AMD Opteron processor, with superior memory bandwidth, is uniquely tailored to address these issues in HPC environments."
As the world's most scalable Linux supercomputer, the Cray XT5 system combines unprecedented sustained application performance with exceptional manageability and reliability, and lower cost of ownership for customers. Using powerful Quad-Core AMD Opteron processors, the Cray XT5 system supports both Cray XT4 blades for optimized compute-to-communications balance and Cray XT5 blades optimized for memory-intensive and/or compute-biased workloads. Following the established success of the Cray XT product line, the Cray XT5 system introduces ECOphlex technology, packaging and design features that promote energy savings along two dimensions: by enabling greater system density and by reducing the need for expensive air cooling and air conditioners. The system's Cray Linux Environment enables optimized performance across a broader range of applications. |
