Sun SPARC Enterprise M-Series servers score new wins in financial services, gaming and education
Santa Clara 28 October 2008 Sun Microsystems announced five new customers have selected SPARC Enterprise M-series servers to power mission-critical deployments in key industries including financial services, gaming and education. Based on the quad-core SPARC64 VII processor and the Solaris Operating System (OS), Sun's SPARC Enterprise servers deliver a highly scalable enterprise-class virtualization and consolidation platform, ideal for high-availability, mission-critical enterprise applications including large-scale databases, BIDW, ERP and CRM.

SPARC Enterprise M-series server wins announced today include:

1. bwin International - Austria

bwin, a provider of on-line gaming entertainment, selected SPARC Enterprise M9000 servers to simplify its IT environment and replace its existing disparate systems. The company sought an easy-to-manage environment that would require less manpower, boost performance, and accommodate future growth. Working with Sun and Unisys, bwin replaced its disparate systems with the SPARC Enterprise M9000 platform, gaining a scalable, easy-to-manage foundation in a smaller, energy-efficient footprint, which ultimately will reduce the company's operating costs. bwin will also run Solaris Cluster Advanced Edition for Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) on its SPARC Enterprise M9000 servers to deliver availability, performance and manageability at a reduced total cost of ownership.

2. City Bank - Bangladesh

City Bank, Bangladesh's top commercial bank, has purchased and deployed the Sun SPARC Enterprise M5000, Sun SPARC Enterprise T5220 server, Sun StorageTek 6540 modular array and Sun StorageTek SL24 autoloader running on the Solaris 10 OS to support the bank's ambitious plans for growth. Sun and key channel partner, aamra technologies won the project, significantly increasing Sun's server and storage footprint in Bangladesh. To keep pace with City Bank's rapid growth, the new installation is designed to support City Bank's credit card base, which is expected to grow from 10,000 current card holders to more than 30,000 by early next year.

3. Clifford Chance - United Kingdom

Clifford Chance, one of the largest leading law firms in the world, selected Sun's SPARC Enterprise M5000, M9000 and T5220 servers to run Oracle E-Business applications to help consolidate and manage its global data centres. Clifford Chance is taking advantage of Sun's latest SPARC-based servers and virtualization technologies, to help reduce the number of physical servers by 70 percent worldwide as a result. With its Sun solution, Clifford Chance will significantly reduce costs and manage complexity by migrating its business-critical applications to run on a single operating system based on the Solaris 10 OS.

4. Kookmin Bank - Korea

Kookmin Bank, the Republic of Korea's top bank, selected Sun's SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 servers for a variety of banking services for its 140 branches throughout Korea. The bank's Multi-Channel Interface (MCI) application is currently being implemented on Sun's M-Series servers at its call centres, banking terminals and ATMs. This network of financial systems incorporates extensive customer information, integrated from a variety of channels and locations that are both convenient and secure. Kookmin Bank's core technology uses Sun's mission-critical server's RAS features to implement an open systems strategy. This highly-reliable and secure environment based on the Solaris 10 OS allows Kookmin Bank to run its business environment 24/7, with virtually no interruption in service.

5. Thomas Jefferson High School - United States

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, ranked byU.S. News & World Reportas the number one high school in the U.S., chose a Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 server to run a number of scientific applications on the Solaris OS. This new Sun solution, which also includes Sun Ray virtual display clients and software, and other Sun servers, delivers significantly improved performance and reliability - and is entirely administered by students. With the new SPARC Enterprise server, TJHSST is now able to increase its system uptime, which improves application performance across the campus. In addition, the entire solution has reduced the school's power and cooling costs.

"We chose the Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 server because a lot of scientific applications such as Matlab for Solaris only run on SPARC, not on x86 systems", stated William Yang, former TJHSST student and lead student systems administrator for the Computer Systems Research Lab at TJHS. "The SPARC Enterprise M4000 server was the best choice because it is a high-performance computer."
