Bull strengthens its Bio Data Center offering with a new NovaScale blade server
Paris 26 March 2008 Bull is launching the NovaScale B260LV (Low Voltage) blade server, designed to cut power consumption for IT infrastructures while boosting their availability. This new server strengthens Bull's Bio Data Center offering, aimed at combining flexibility, performance and sustainable development within the Data Center.

The new NovaScale B260LV blade server features Intel Xeon L5400 quad-core low voltage processors, reducing electrical consumption by 40% compared with traditional processors, as well as SSD type (Solid State Disks) discs that reduce energy consumption by 87% in comparison to classic storage solutions.

The NovaScale B260LV blade server is particularly well-suited to demanding environments in terms of cooling facilities, floor space and high levels of performance. Integrated in a high-density, optimized chassis, it provides the ideal platform for Web 2.0 infrastructures as well as for rationalizing and simplifying the data centre.

"Because of its low energy consumption, its remarkable performance/per watt ratio, and its high availability level, the NovaScale B260LV server is perfectly in line with Bull's 'Bio Data Center', a new approach designed to rationalize IT infrastructures and reduce their carbon footprint", explained Olivier Gaumont, Director of Bull's Servers Enterprise Business Unit.

Fitted with low consumption Intel quad-core processors, the NovaScale B260LV server also features SSD (Solid State Discs) technology discs that only consume 2 watts instead of 16 watts with traditional discs; this means an 87% reduction in power consumption.

By way of comparison, the NovaScale B260LV server consumes 16% less electricity than the HP BL460c blade server with identical characteristics.

The SSD-type discs featured in the NovaScale B260LV server provide an innovative alternative to traditional storage solutions, with four times the level of availability. With no moving parts SSD discs largely eliminate seek time, latency and failures associated with a conventional hard disc drive.

For multi-server environments, the Bull StoreWay Optima1210 external storage solution can be shared between several blade servers, offering additional options in terms of energy reduction and ease of management. Designed to support up to 28 blades, this solution is capable of hosting both applications and operating systems, providing exceptional density, and very high levels of availability.

With Bull's R@ck'n Roll offering, complex systems comprising several servers and their storage sub-systems can be incorporated within a single rack. This means they can be entirely assembled, wired and tested at Bull's manufacturing site, and then deployed swiftly and easily at the customer's premises.

Finally, by providing end-to-end systems administration for all blade servers and their storage sub-systems, Bull's NovaScale Master software suite enables reduced cost of ownership, while facilitating the on-going management of complex IT infrastructures.

Advantages of the NovaScale B260LV server include:

  • Considerably reduced power consumption
  • Unrivalled performance/watt ratio
  • High-level availability with SSD discs
  • Lower total cost of ownership thanks to rapid R@ck n' Roll deployment and easy management with NovaScale Master

NovaScale B260LV blade server technical specifications include:

  • Up to 2 Intel Xeon L5420 or L5410 quad-core low voltage processors
  • 1333MHz Front Side Bus
  • Up to 16GB of main memory (FBD DDR2)
  • 16GB capacity per disc. Extendable to 32GB with RAID0
  • Total consumption of a complete blade server with 2x Intel Xeon L5420 processors, 2x 16GB SSD discs, 8GB of RAM and an FC double port card: 234VA
Price of a B260LV configuration with 2GB of memory, 1 Intel Xeon L5410 processor and a 16GB SSD disc is 3,270 euro. The B260LV is available immediately.
