One more time, CERN of Geneva selects the Italian E4 Computer Engineering and Super-Micro Computers Inc. for further expanding its computational capacity
Scandiano 18 March 2008 Once again E4 Computer Engineering, a small but fast growing Italian computer company, has been awarded by CERN, the large and prestigious European Centre for Nuclear Research, an order for 300 Super-Micro SuperBlade servers, equipped with INTEL Xeon Quad-core, bringing the total of computing and storage servers supplied to CERN in the last 3 years to more than 1500.

The excellence of Super-Micro and Intel products have played a substantial role in securing this business, but the competence, reliability and dedication of the E4 team have played a role which is at least not less important.

Vincenzo Nuti, CEO of E4 Computer Engineering, says very naively: "E4 is not an acronym, it is simply my fourth (Enterprise N° 4) successful attempt to create a viable and profitable business."

Based in Scandiano (a small town not far from Reggio Emilia and Bologna, worth of visiting for its outstanding food, site of the 13th century castle named "La Rocca", hometown of Lazzaro Spallanzani, the scientist who paved the way to the studies of L. Pasteur and, incidentally, also of Romano Prodi, former prime minister and former president of the EU Committee) E4 was founded in 2002 and since 2003 has recorded, together with an impressive revenue growth (today approx. 8 million Euro), 5 consecutive years of profit. Remarkably, E4 is a self-made initiative, that has no political support of any kind and no EU funding as well. Vincenzo Nuti's father had a small mechanical industry, his son transferred his entrepreneurial spirit into electronics.

Large international manufacturers consider E4 a very viable, dynamic and successful partner in Italy and Europe: on top of Super-Micro, Intel, AMD, Qlogic (IB and FC switch), Dot Hill (storage /SAN), Samsung (memories), ICP Vortex (raid controllers), WD, Hitachi, Seagate, Panasas (Nas HPC), Data Direct Networks. Specific configurations are designed based on Customers' needs and requirements , and can be tested prior to delivery.

Soon the products offer of E4 will, most likely, be enriched by a new system designed and produced in Italy by ScreenLogix, HiDRA (High Performance Dynamically Reconfigurable Array), a new class of scalable compute system, low cost, low power consumption, low latency, fault-tolerant and extremely high performance representing a "Data Center in a Box", a "Database Accellerator" and a "Personal Supercomputer". To say the least, a "break-through" in the high performance computing marketplace.

In addition to CERN, customers like Ferrari Racing Team, INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics), Alenia Space, CASPUR (Rome InterUniversity Consortium), ENEA, EnginSoft, Novartis/Sienabiotech and others have selected E4 as their supplier.

"When it comes to large European procurements", says Vincenzo Nuti, "we still feel like David and Goliath, when we compete with large prestigious vendors, but with over 8000 units delivered so far and a steady growth profile we feel that our enthusiasm, competence, reliability, commitment and will to stay always on the leading edge of both technologies and architectures, will soon entitle us to a fair positioning in the marketplace. And, all in all, wasn't David the one who won?"
