HellasGrid
HellasGrid
The Local Office of the Information Society – Ministry of Economy and Finance established in December 2002 the HellasGrid task force, which was the nucleus of the Hellasgrid National Grid Initiative. Its task was to define the basic strategy and guidelines for the Greek national, regional and international grid activities. The outcome of the above was documented in the Hellasgrid strategy document http://www.hellasgrid.gr/engine/index.php?op=modload&modname=Downloads&action=downloadsviewfile&ctn=17&language=en
The above work was funded with around €0,5 million. At the end of 2003 the 20 partners signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which established the first instance of the Hellasgrid National Grid Initiative, coordinated by GRNET.
At the end of 2004 the Hellasgrid national grid infrastructure project was approved with a duration of 2 years and a budget of around €2 million. The project has developed the computing, storage and virtual collaboration infrastructures, complemented with operation, middleware, security, training and dissemination activities. The infrastructure of HellasGrid consists of 6 clusters with a total of 850 CPUs and around 100 TB of storage. The clusters are located in Athens (3) (Demokritos, NDC and IASA), Thessaloniki (AUTH), Patras (CTI-CEID) and Heraclion-Crete (ICS-FORTH). http://www.hellasgrid.gr/infrastructure/
The Hellasgrid MoU was extended in scope and parntership and was signed at the end of 2007 among 25 leading institutes, which officially plays the role of the NGI. Two committees similar to the Hellasgrid Task Force ones were composed, a governing one and a scientific one, while GRNET acts as the coordinating partner.
The Hellasgrid project has been extended until the end of 2008, with some additional funding in the order of €1 million.

BREIN (IP) seeks to develop a user-centric Grid framework by applying agent technologies and semantic web technologies, with the aim of providing businesses with a means of deploying Grids to solve their specific business problems. The proposal will contribute towards closing the gap between high-level business security requirements and low-level security policies. Business management of Stuttgart Airport is addressed as an application.

In 1998 BIHARNET (Academic Research Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina) was established by the University of Banja Luka, the two Mostar universities, the university of Sarajevo and the university of Tuzla with funding from the government of Slovenia.
Because of lack of budget, BIHARNET operation came to an end in 2000. In November 2007, the Federal Ministry of Communications and Transport, the Federal Ministry of Science and Education and BH Telecom announced their joined plan to revitalize the Bosnia-Herzegovina National Research and Education Network. However, a decision regarding revitalization of BIHARNET or creation of a new BiH NREN was not reached at that time.
BIHARNET has a 1 Gbps link to the SEREEN-2 node in Belgrade.

The DORII project aims to deploy e-Infrastructure for new scientific communities, where on the one hand the ICT technology is still not present at the appropriate level, but on the other hand it is demanded to empower its daily work. We deal with a group of scientific users, and this is a reference for DORII, with experimental equipment and instrumentation that are not integrated or integrated only partially with the European infrastructure.
The DORII is focusing on the following selected scientific areas:
- earthquake community, with various sensor networks;
- environmental science community;
- experimental science community, with synchrotron and free electron lasers.

BauVOGrid
2007-06-01
Virtual Organisations in builsing construction often consist of dozens of contractors and subcontracters in a complex network. Delegation of work and responsibilities are often not very well defined and hence is an error prone process than can lead to considerable costs. The goal of the BauVOGrid project is to increase the operationalibility of a real "Bau-VO" by applying a building-Grid. BauVOGrid will built an authentication and authorisation infrastructure on top of the basic D-Grid and combine this into a coherent management infrastructire for Virtual Organisation (VO) processes. All types of resoruces can be combined and presented in the office or at a construction site. Four key technologies are being integrated to achieve this result: D-Grid, Semantic Web, Process managemetn and mobile information management.

In 1992 the Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) defined a national policy for supercomputing. In 1994 5 systems were installed at university sites. These systems have since then been gradually replaced with funding from the MoE.
In 1992 MoE provided funds to create the national academic network that became operational in 1993. In 1996 all Czech universities and the Czech Academy of Sciences established the CESNET association which is responsible for the operation of the network and its development. The development of the network is covered by the budgets of the MoE and the Academy of Sciences and by grants from the Czech Grant Agency.

UNINETT
The national policy on high-speed networking is determined by the NREN UNINETT together with the Ministry of Education and Research. The policy is to let the national high-capacity network remain well ahead of what is commercially available with regards to capacity, uptime and functionality. The capacity should be over-provisioned to allow for the development of new applications and experimental usage. A hybrid network is planned for and should be in line with NORDUnet and GEANT2.
The national network UNINETT connects more than 200 organizations for education and research. Its backbone operates at 2.5 Gbps. International connectivity is through a 10 Gbps connection to NORDUnet.
UNINETTS’ 2007 budget is €11.2 million. It is a combination of user funding (53%) and central government funding (47%). The funding for the policy implementation is integrated in other UNINETT expenses.

GridCC
The goals of the GRIDCC project can be summarized as follows:
- To develop generic Grid middleware, based on existing building blocks (Grid Services) which will allow the remote control and monitoring of instrumentation such as distributed;
- To incorporate the new middleware into a few significant applications that will allow the software to be validated both in terms of functionality and quality of service aspects: European Power Grid, Meteorology, Analysis of Neurophysiological data, RemoteOperation of an Accelerator Facility, High Energy Physics Experiment;
- To disseminate widely the new software technology, the results of the evaluation on the testbeds and to encourage a wide range of enterprises to evaluate and adopt this Grid-oriented approach to real-time control and monitoring of remote instrumentation.

URAN
The Ukrainian Research and Academic Network (URAN) was mainly established through the National Informatization Programme for 1998-2000.
URAN connects about 100 R&D and educational institutions in 18 regions of Ukraine and operates its own optical networks, totalling 160 km in length, in 12 of the largest Ukrainian cities (Kiev, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Odessa, Poltava, Vinnytsa, Lviv, Khmelnitsky, Zaporizhzhia, Sevastopol and Simferopol). The large support in establishing URAN optical networks was made due to financial grants from NATO. During ten years (1998-2007) Ukraine national research and academic network received from the NATO Science for Peace Department the donation of US $900 000 for equipment and especially for optical cables installation.
The backbone links are at 15 Mbps upto 100 Mbps. The link to GÉANT2 is at 155 Mbps. This link ends up in Warsaw where it is being carried on by PSNC, the Polish NREN, following an exclusive agreement with URAN.
The 2007 budget is € 0.4 million. It is provided by its users.

ARNES
ARNES is the academic and research network of Slovenia. It was established in 1992 by the Ministry for Science and Technology (which mainly funds the costs of ARNES, €5.7 million in 2007) and the Ministry for Education and Sport.
The backbone of ARNES operates at 1 Gbps speed (3 Gbps between Ljubjana and Maribor) and connects (typically at 1 Gbps) the Slovenian universities, higher education institutes and government research organisations. Libraries and many secondary and primary schools are connected at 2 Mbps or less. The connection to GÉANT is 2.5 Gbps.

Policy description of France
2007-04-06
The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the universities determine the French na-tional HPC policy for academic research. CNRS funds a national HPC centre (IDRIS, near Paris) and the Ministry for Education, higher Education and Research a second national HPC centre (CINES, in Montpellier).
The national HPC policy is to support a hierarchical structure of resources. Users should find resources available at all levels of performance and should be granted access to them according to their needs. Resources are more and more centralised (and rare) as the level of performance increases.
The French government announced in 2006 a 4-year plan to bring HPC in France at the level of other major European countries. The newly created agency GENCI (Grand Equipement National pour le Calcul Intensif) will receive from 2007 on an annual budget of € 25 million. This budget comes from the government (50%), CEA (20%), CNRS (20%) and the universities (10%). A strategic committee will advise the Director General of Research and Innovation (of the MENESR ministry) on the HPC facilities needed in research and industry.
CCRT has ordered a 43 Tflop/s Bull cluster (6784 cores) to be delivered early 2007.
Meteo France: upgrade of the NEC SX-8R to 28 Tflop/s in 2009.

Access to the resources of both national centres is free after peer review. Once a year there is a joint nation-wide request for proposals to use the facilities at the centres. These proposals are examined by the appropriate Evaluation Committee (10 Committees, about 10 experts each). Resources are allocated by the Directors of Centres, following the recommendations of their Scientific Council.

Policy description of Sweden
The Swedish National Allocations Committee (SNAC) regulates the use of national computational, grid, visualisation and data warehousing facilities through evaluation of applications for such resources. It also stimulates the innovative use of these resources. SNA issues calls for proposal every 6 months. The SNIC centres also allocate resources to local users.
The Swedish Research Council (VR) funds through the Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) six national HPC centres: C3SE, HPC2N, LUNARC, NSC, PDC and UPPMAX. SNIC is responsible for the strategy and the development of HPC resources in Sweden. €4.5 of the yearly budget of €8.5 million is provided by the Government.
In December 2006 the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation (KAW) awarded € 2 million for investment in HPC resources.

The Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) has been selected by the ESFRI roadmap process as one of the 35 crucial pillars of the European Research Area. This project will prepare a major upgrade of SHARE for all 27 EU members plus associated Switzerland and Israel during the decade 2010-2020. SHARE builds an infrastructure of micro data necessary to understand individual and societal ageing as a process in time that is strongly influenced by pension, health care and labour market regimes and their reforms. It is designed by researchers for researchers and integrates economics, medicine, and social sciences. Research based on this infrastructure will also serve as a feedback mechanism to support fact-based EU policies, such as the open method of coordination and the Lisbon agenda, to help meeting the challenges of population ageing in all countries of the EU.

ELI-PP
Extreme Light Infrastructure Preparatory Phase
7960000
2007-11-01
2010-10-31
Among the most significant scientific inquiries defined by Science (July 2005) was whether or not scientists will be able to build a laser of intensity sufficient to rip photons into electron-positron pairs. ELI will be the first extreme light infrastructure to approach this limit. It represents the consensual effort of 13 European countries, more than 50 laboratories and numerous international collaborators. Dedicated to the fundamental study of laser-matter interaction in a new and unsurpassed, ultra-relativistic regime, this facility will be based on an exawatt-class laser delivering ultra-short (down to fractions of attosecond) pulses at least 100 times more powerful than any other existing or planned.
ELI will strive to be a highly multidisciplinary platform with specialized laser, particle or radiation beam lines dedicated to wide scientific fields, from fundamental ones: atomic, particle, nuclear, gravitational, and cosmology, to societal ones. ELI will for instance benefit in life science, nanotechnology material science, or environment. ELI will finally foster technology transfers, as well as education and training. The ELI preparatory phase aims at establishing all the elements for the start of a successful construction and operation of the facility.

Building and promoting a Linux-based operating system to support virtual organisations for next generation Grids
XtreemOS (IP) seeks to extend the Linux operating system to Grid environments and virtual organisation contexts. It proposes to design, implement and evaluate a Grid operating system.
The approach proposed in this project is to investigate the construction of a new Grid OS, XtreemOS, based on the existing general purpose OS Linux. A set of system services, extended those found in the traditional Linux, will provide users with all the Grid capabilities associated with current Grid middleware, but fully integrated into the OS. The underlying Linux will be extended as needed to support VOs spanning across many machines and to provide appropriate interfaces to the Grid OS services.
